GM Duramax Exhaust Systems
GM Duramax exhaust systems flow pretty well for the amount of power they put out. Overall, from the factory, considering the weight of these trucks; they produce pretty good horsepower, torque, and fuel mileage numbers the way they are tuned from the factory. However, if you plan to do any kind of upgrades to improve the power of your Duramax, we recommend that you upgrade to an after market exhaust system.
By upgrading from the restrictive 3.5 inch factory system to a Mandrel bent 4-5 inch exhaust system, you will reduce backpressure allowing the turbo to spool quicker while also reducing EGT's (exhaust gas temperatures).
This translates to more power and torque sooner in the rpm range. With the resulting higher and longer torque line providing a much more efficient running Duramax.
Now, the trick is figuring out what you want to do, as well as what you can afford is the first step to determining which exhaust system is right for you.
For off road only applications it is always best to remove any and all factory emissions equipment this can be accomplished by first replacing the catalytic converter with a piece of 3.5 inch pipe to open the flow. Which will be all you need if you are on a budget and you do not plan to upgrade enough to run 12's times for now.
You will also want to determine what you will be doing the most in your Duramax. Is it a work truck that hauls heavy loads often? Or a daily driver that you want to be able to show off in on the weekend. If you use it to haul a lot, you will definitely want to install an aftermarket exhaust system that includes a muffler. The constant drone of the exhaust when loaded can be overwhelming on most diesel pick up trucks.
BUT, if you like it loud and bordering on the annoying, if you like to disturb the peace, then a 5 inch straight piped aftermarket exhaust without a muffler would be the choice for you!
There are several available options from several different companies for a quality aftermarket exhaust system, just contact Customer Service for more information about which kit would serve your needs and budget the best.
Either way you want to let your Duramax Diesel breath to gain the most efficiency possible, and this can be done on a budget.
